The Sharaton and its nightclub, the Casa Club, on Street 47 north of Wat Phnom, were owned by Meng Sreng, a son of Teng Boonma, one of Cambodia’s most powerful businessmen and a close associate of Hun Sen.

“Sharaton” is the correct spelling, but the hotel has since been renamed the “Casa Hotel” as Cambodia attempts to rein in rampant brand name infringement.

For an account of the activities of Meng Sreng, read this account, by Major Mark Smith; however we do not vouch for its accuracy.

Meng Sreng is not to be confused with Meng Srieng, the owner of a large Cambodian shipping business.
